From the Grab Bag: “Freakonomics”

“From the Grab Bag” is written by various members of the DivX team and highlights under-the-radar movies that are available in DivX format.

For a few weeks, friends across the country were living in what had been dubbed: “The Snowpocalypse”. I was seeing daily pictures on Facebook of icicles, blizzards and waist deep snow. Not surprisingly, this “Snowpocalypse” never came to sunny San Diego. Last weekend however, was a different story. It rained for almost an ENTIRE DAY. We even had tiny hail for a minute or two. There was confusion, anger and mass panic. San Diego residents took to Facebook to whine about report the bad weather. As for myself, I took it as an opportunity to stay in with my wife and watch a movie. (SHAMELESS/AWESOME PLUG AHEAD) The convenience of buying the movie online in DivX format meant I could stay inside and, more importantly, stay nice and dry.

I was browsing the DivX video-on-demand catalog and came across the documentary “Freakonomics“. Several friends have raved about the book, but I had never personally taken the time to read it. The documentary described itself as follows: More…

From the Grab Bag: “Beer Wars”

So now 2010 is almost over and 2011 will soon be upon us. It is that special time of year when we turn to thoughts of family, traditions and….beer. Specifically craft beer.

The DivX headquarters are located in San Diego, California. Most people know San Diego for its great weather, good surf and scenic sunsets. What you may not know, however, is that San Diego also has a growing (and thriving) craft beer industry. The selections found in our local bars go beyond your basic variety of fizzy yellow beers. The beers here are about as unique as the people who drink them.

So imagine how happy I was when I was browsing through the DivX Video-on-Demand catalog for another “From the Grab Bag” entry and found a documentary titled “Beer Wars.” Check out the synopsis and the review after the break: More…

From the Grab Bag: “Winnebago Man”

There are a lot of awesome movies you can purchase and download in DivX format. Do you want to catch up on the Harry Potter films before heading to the theater for the latest adventure? Go for it. Want to get your Iron Man fix? Download away. But what about all those films that don’t have trailers playing during every single commercial break of “Dancing With the Stars”? While browsing around websites such as WB Shop or Film Fresh, I started finding a lot of under-the-radar films that intrigued me.

Last week while perusing Film Fresh, I saw a new documentary titled “Winnebago Man.” My first thought was, “Is this a documentary about THE Winnebago man from youtube?” A quick youtube search yielded this trailer (NSFW language): More…

Get Your Scared On (and Test Your Scary Movie Knowledge)

Department stores are starting to sell Christmas decorations, which can only mean one thing: Halloween is right around the corner.

There are several ways one can celebrate Halloween. You can carve pumpkins, wear crazy costumes, or beg your neighbors for candy (which APPARENTLY is socially unacceptable at my age…). Our friends at Film Fresh are celebrating the scary season by offering 20% off all movies through midnight on Halloween (Oct. 31). To get the deal, just use the coupon code FFHWEEN2010 during checkout.

This promotion could not have come at a better time, because our favorite DivX Halloween tradition is watching scary movies. So, every day for the next 10 days, we will be recommending a different film that we think would be perfect for this time of year. Each movie can be purchased (sorry, U.S. only*) and downloaded immediately from Film Fresh for playback on your DivX Certified device. This means that you can not only enjoy your scary movie on your computer, but you can play it on your DivX Certified portable DVD player or mobile phone and watch it while camping in a haunted forest or roaming around graveyards at night. (You do that, right?)

Click through the break to see if you can guess our movie recommendations and even win a prize. More…
